Flood Damage and Insurance: Steps to Take After a Storm
Recent heavy rainfall and flash flooding have caused damage in communities across southern Connecticut. The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) reminds consumers to take a few important steps before beginning the cleanup and recovery process.
Be Careful When Hiring Help
Storm damage can bring contractors offering quick cleanup and repairs. Take your time before hiring someone:
- Get a written estimate.
- Verify that the contractor is properly licensed when a license is required.
- Do not pay the full amount upfront.
- Do not feel pressured to sign an agreement.
- Learn more about how to Protect Yourself from Post-Storm Scams.
Document Damage Before Cleaning Up
Take photos and videos of damage to your home, belongings, and vehicles before moving or discarding anything. When possible, keep damaged items and materials until your insurance company has had an opportunity to inspect them. If something needs to be thrown away, photograph it first.
Keep receipts for cleanup, temporary repairs, and other expenses related to the damage.
Contact Your Insurance Company
Report the damage to your insurer or agent as soon as possible. Ask what information they need and whether an inspection is required before permanent repairs begin. Keep a record of your conversations and what you are told.
Flood damage is generally not covered by a standard homeowners policy. Coverage depends on the type of insurance you have and the cause of the damage. Vehicle flood damage may be covered under comprehensive auto insurance.
Prepare for the Next Storm
Last week’s flooding is a reminder that intense rainfall can cause flooding even outside mapped high-risk areas. CID’s Climate Risk Mapping Tool can help you understand the risks facing your property.
Take some time to review your insurance coverage and consider whether flood insurance makes sense for your home. CID’s Flood Insurance Information Center explains coverage options and how flood insurance works.
A home inventory can also make it easier to document your belongings if you need to file a claim. CID’s Home Inventory Checklist can help you get started. For more tips on preparing your home and insurance coverage before severe weather, visit CID’s Hurricane Season resource.
