Certification Requirements for School Nurse-Teachers (#072)

Thank you for exploring how you can promote the health of Connecticut students. Here are the requirements for certification:

A valid Connecticut registered nurse license

Graduated with a Bachelor's degree from a school of professional nursing at a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum of:

• 40 semester hours of credit in general education, including: 
  • 6 credits in English
  • 6 credits in social sciences 
• 36 semester hours of credit in a planned program of study and experience that includes study of each of the following: 
  • Foundations of education
  • Educational psychology
  • Curriculum and methods of teaching
  • Supervised field experience in a public health agency or a minimum of six semester hours of credit and no more than 12 semester hours of credit in student teaching of health education
  • Health education
  • School health services

A course of study in special education comprising at least 36 clock hours that includes study in

• Understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education
• Methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

IMPORTANT: To eventually advance a certificate endorsed for School Nurse Teacher to the professional level, candidates must complete either a master’s degree or at least 30 semester hours of graduate credit. This may include coursework required for the initial educator certificate.
