Get electricity you can afford

The Office of Consumer Counsel (OCC) advocates for Connecticut’s electric customers.

  • We speak up when Eversource and United Illuminating want to raise rates.
  • We help the Connecticut General Assembly write laws that are good for electricity consumers.
  • We recommend resources to help you use less electricity and stay safe.

We also know people need electricity even when times are tough. There are programs that lower bills for people with financial or medical challenges. Look for program information below.

Learn about electricity

Your electric bill covers the price of electricity itself (known as supply), and the cost of the whole electric system in place that gets the electricity to you (known as delivery). This electric system refers to the poles and wires that bring electricity into our homes. Most people in Connecticut have their electricity delivered by United Illuminating (UI) or Eversource, depending on where they live. Some people choose to have an alternative supplier, but these two companies will still deliver energy to your home. Residents in Bozrah, Groton, Jewett City, Norwich, South Norwalk, and Wallingford receive electric service provided by the town.

As a customer of Eversource or United Illuminating, there are opportunities to save money and lower your bill by using a third-party to supply your electricity. Follow the links below to learn about the third-party supplier market or browse supplier rates, file a complaint about your electric service, or follow along with current PURA cases to learn how prices and services are regulated.

Consumer complaints

Make your voice heard

If you aren’t happy with your current utility service, there are ways to make sure your voice is heard. Our team of lawyers, experts, and support staff works hard to fulfill our mission. OCC’s job is to speak up for all Connecticut consumers who use regulated utility services. We can’t, however, give case-by-case legal advice.

Safety

Stay safe!

We’re so used to using electricity that it’s easy to forget it can be dangerous. Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones indoors, outdoors, during storms, and more. That includes using Call Before You Dig (CBYD). This free service can tell you if there are any underground utility pipes and cables where you plan to dig.
