New FEMA Tool Makes It Easier to Get Flood Insurance Online
CONSUMER NOTICE – November 2, 2026
The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is highlighting a new online tool from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that allows consumers to get a personalized quote and purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Available at FloodSmart.gov, the tool gives consumers another way to explore flood insurance options, connect with a local insurance agent, and purchase coverage online if eligible.
Understand Your Flood Risk
Flooding can happen anywhere, not just in areas designated as high risk. Standard homeowners and renters insurance policies generally do not cover flood damage, so it is important to understand your risk and review your coverage before severe weather strikes.
CID’s Climate Risk Mapping Tool allows residents to explore potential weather-related risks, including flood exposure, that may affect their property.
Flood insurance is available through the NFIP and private insurers, and we encourage you to shop for a policy that fits your needs. Coverage, limits, and costs vary by policy. NFIP policies typically have a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins, so consumers should plan ahead rather than wait until a storm is approaching.
Explore Flood Insurance Options
The new FEMA tool allows consumers to:
- Get a personalized flood insurance quote.
- Explore coverage options.
- Connect with a local insurance agent.
- Share quote information with an insurance professional.
- Purchase an NFIP policy online if eligible.
