What to Know About Flooding and Insurance
As we face more frequent and intense storms, the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) urges residents and businesses to stay informed about their insurance coverage, especially when it comes to flood damage, so they can protect what matters most.
Flooding Is Not Covered by Standard Policies: Homeowners, renters, and business insurance typically do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance must be purchased separately, either through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurer. Flood insurance policies generally take 30 days to go into effect, so don’t wait until a storm is approaching to buy coverage.
Anyone Can Be at Risk: Floods can happen anywhere, even outside flood zones. Just one inch of water in your home can cause over $25,000 in damage. More than 25% of flood claims are from properties outside high-risk areas.
Avoid Contractor Scams: Use licensed professionals, get written estimates, and never pay the full amount upfront or sign over your insurance payment.
