Raising Flood Awareness: Hurricane Season Brings Increased Flooding Risk

June marks the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, and the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) urges residents to prepare and protect their property, especially against flooding.

Hurricanes are often associated with high winds and coastal damage, but they can also bring extended periods of heavy rainfall that lead to severe inland flooding. Flooding is not limited to coastal areas; even communities far from the shoreline are vulnerable. In fact, nearly 40% of flood losses occur outside designated flood zones.

Whether you live in a high-risk or low-risk area, it's important to understand your potential exposure and consider flood insurance as part of your overall preparedness plan.

Here are a few important facts to keep in mind:

  • Flood damage is generally not covered by homeowner’s insurance.
  • Just one inch of flooding can cause more than $25,000 in damage.
  • It generally takes 30 days for a flood insurance policy to take effect, so don’t wait until a storm is approaching to get coverage.

Flood insurance can be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or through the private market. Talk to your agent about your options.
