Fire Risk and Insurance Coverage Awareness

Fires are becoming a growing concern in Connecticut and across the Northeast. Changing weather patterns and dry conditions can increase the risk of brush fires, grass fires, hill fires, and wildfires that threaten homes, businesses, and communities.

The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) urges homeowners, renters, and business owners to review their insurance policies and to understand how fire damage is covered or excluded.

Property and Liability Coverage

As a general rule, all homeowners, renters, and commercial property insurance policies cover fire damage, including damage caused by wildfires. For commercial insurance purposes, wildfire is generally defined as a planned or unplanned fire that grows out of control and damages an acre or more of vegetation. It may, but does not have to, consume houses, buildings, or other structures. Connecticut is generally not considered a high-risk wildfire state.

Some insurers have added wildfire liability exclusions to commercial insurance policies nationwide. Businesses should carefully review their commercial liability coverage and speak with their insurance agent or other advisors to understand the risk of wildfire liability and determine whether additional coverage is needed.

Wildfire liability exclusions do not apply to homeowners’ or renters’ insurance policies.

Reduce Your Risk:

  • Clear dry brush, leaves, and debris around your property.
  • Keep roofs and gutters clear.
  • Store propane tanks and firewood at least 30 feet from structures.

If You Experience Fire Damage:

  • Contact your insurance company right away.
  • Take photos or videos before cleaning up.
  • Keep receipts for temporary repairs or lodging
