Residents:
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Complete Pre-Licensing Education
- Before you can take the Producer exam, you must complete a required pre-licensing course.

Step 2: Schedule and Take the Exam
- After completing your pre-licensing course, download the Pearson Candidate Handbook and schedule your exam:

On exam day, you must present either:- Your pre-licensing education certificate, or
- A pre-licensing waiver letter
Step 3: Wait for Exam Results to Upload
- Once you pass the exam, wait 1–2 business days before applying for your license.
The Connecticut Insurance Department will verify your exam results electronically; you do not need to upload or submit results yourself.
Step 4: Apply for Your License
- Submit your license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
Important Notices: (Residents)
These points can prevent delays if followed:
- Do NOT choose the “Fraternal Agent” license if you tested for Life and/or Accident & Health.
Fraternal Agent and Insurance Producer are different license types. License fees are not refundable if you select the wrong type. - Do NOT take the Certified Insurance Consultant (CIC) exam if your goal is a Producer license. The CIC exam does not qualify you for a Producer license.
Non-Residents:
- Connecticut grants license reciprocity if you hold an equivalent Producer license in your home state.
- Apply directly through National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
Residents:
Step 1: Complete Pre-Licensing Education for the New Line of Authority
Complete the required pre-licensing course for the new line of authority before scheduling the exam.
Step 2: Schedule and Take the Exam

You must bring either:
- Your pre-licensing education certificate, or
- A pre-licensing waiver letter to the exam center.
Step 3: Wait for Exam Results to Upload
After passing the exam, wait 1–2 business days before applying. The Department verifies exam results electronically; you do not need to submit them.
Step 4: Apply to Add the Line of Authority
Apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) to amend your existing license.
Non-Residents:
If your home state license already includes the line of authority you want to add, Connecticut will grant reciprocity.
Apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) to amend your Connecticut license.
Reinstatements are completed through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
Residents
Within One Year of Expiration
- Complete all required CE for your license
- Submit your reinstatement application through NIPR
- Pay the late renewal fee of $160, plus the standard $160 renewal fee, for a total of $320
After One Year of Expiration
- You must complete the full pre-licensing course for your license type
- Pass the required licensing exam
- Submit your reinstatement application through NIPR
Non-Residents
- Must hold an active license in your home/resident state
- No Connecticut CE is required
- Submit your reinstatement application through NIPR
Expiration Dates:
- Individuals: License expires on the last day of your birth month
- For residents, all 24 CE credits must be completed by the expiration date
- Note: For new licensees, the first license cycle may be shorter than two years.
Example: License issued May 10, 2020, and last birthday December 4, 2019; the expiration would be December 31, 2021. Subsequent renewals follow the standard two-year cycle.
Late Renewals:
- If you do not pay your renewal fee by the expiration date, your license and all appointments are canceled
- Residents must also complete all CE requirements by the expiration date, or their license and appointments will be canceled
Certain professional designations can allow you to waive the pre-licensing course or the exam requirement for a Producer license.
Pre-Licensing Waiver (Exemptions)
If you qualify, you may skip the pre-licensing course.
Steps to Request a Waiver:
- Obtain a currently dated letter (within 90 days) from your professional society confirming your designation
- Email the letter to: cid.licensing@ct.gov, Attn: Producer Pre-Licensing Waiver
- Include the following information in your email:
- Full name
- Address
- SSN
- Date of birth
- Lines of authority for which you are requesting the waiver
Eligible Designations by Line of Authority:
- Life: CEBS, ChFC, CIC, CFP, CLU, FLMI, LUTCF
- Accident & Health / Sickness: CEBS, CLU, HIA, REBC, RHU
- Property, Casualty, Personal Lines: AAI, ARM, CIC, CPCU
Examination Waiver (Exemptions)
If you qualify, you may skip the licensing exam.

- Apply for the license via NIPR
- Obtain a currently dated letter (within 90 days) from your professional society confirming your designation
- Email the letter to: cid.licensing@ct.gov, Attn: Producer Examination Exemption
- Include the following in your email:
- Full name
- NIPR transaction number
Eligible Designations by Line of Authority:
- Life: CLU
- Accident & Health / Sickness: CLU
- Property, Casualty, Personal Lines: CPCU
Renewals are processed through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
Renewal notices are emailed about 90 days before your expiration date.
Residents
Step 1: Complete Continuing Education (CE)
All required CE must be completed before submitting your renewal application.
- Your CE must show as COMPLIANT
- If CE is completed by your expiration date and reported within 10 days, the renewal fee is $160 (no late fee)
- If CE is completed after your expiration date, the late renewal fee of $320 applies
- You have up to one year from your expiration date to complete CE and submit a late renewal. After one year, the license must be reinstated as a new application.
Step 2: Renew Through NIPR
Submit your renewal application and payment through NIPR once CE is complete.
Non-Residents
To renew a Connecticut non-resident Producer license:
- You must hold an active Producer license in your home/resident state
- No Connecticut CE is required
- Renew through NIPR
Payment Methods
NIPR accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, PayPal, and electronic checks. The Department does not accept cash or paper checks.
Keep Your Contact Information Current
You are responsible for maintaining your email and address in NIPR. Failure to receive a renewal notice does not excuse renewal requirements. Allow 1–2 business days for updates. You cannot update information once a renewal transaction begins.
- Resident Insurance Producers licensed with Life, Accident & Health or Sickness, Property, Casualty or Personal Lines authority, must complete twenty-four (24) CE credits each renewal period.
- You must complete 21 General and 3 Laws/Regs/Ethics for a total of 24 credits.
- Make sure you have completed all requirements outlined on your transcript. The “status” must read “Compliant” for all categories.
- If you have completed your CE course(s) and the information is not shown on your transcript, contact the vendor you took the course with directly.

The following individuals do not have a CE requirement:
- Licensees that hold Credit Only or Limited Lines Travel Only authority.
- Non-Residents.
Please be reminded that it is your responsibility to keep your contact information current. Failure to receive renewal notices or other important correspondence due to outdated contact information does not excuse you from meeting renewal deadlines or other regulatory requirements. Ensure that your address, phone number, and email are up-to-date to avoid any disruptions in your licensing status.
