Changing Resident State - Individual & Business Entity Producers ONLY

PRODUCERS MOVING INTO CONNECTICUT (New to CT)

Step 1: Apply for a Connecticut license

Step 2: Pre-Licensing & Exam Requirements

  • You do not need Connecticut pre-licensing education or exams if both conditions are met:
    1. You held an active Producer license in your former state within 90 days of moving out
    2. You apply for a Connecticut resident license within 90 days of leaving your former state
  • If you do not apply within 90 days, you must complete Connecticut’s pre-licensing education and exam requirements.

Step 3: Complete the Residency Change Request or Letter of Clearance

  • After your Connecticut license is approved, submit the Residency Change Request form to update your address/residency:
    Residency Change Request Form

Please Note: Connecticut does not require a Clearance Letter to become a resident licensee.

PRODUCERS MOVING OUT OF CONNECTICUT (to another State)

When leaving Connecticut, the path depends on your new state’s requirements:

Option 1: If New state does NOT require a Clearance Letter

Option 2: If New state requires a Clearance Letter

  • Submit the Letter of Clearance Request form to Connecticut:
    Letter of Clearance Request Form
  • Do not submit the Residency Change Request form in this case.
  • Once your new state approves your license, email cid.licensing@ct.gov to convert your Connecticut license to a nonresident license without losing authority.

DEFINITION — HOME / RESIDENT LICENSE STATE

Your resident state is the state where you:

  • Maintain your principal place of business or residence, and
