Changing Resident State - Individual & Business Entity Producers ONLY
PRODUCERS MOVING INTO CONNECTICUT (New to CT)
Step 1: Apply for a Connecticut license
- Apply online through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
Step 2: Pre-Licensing & Exam Requirements
- You do not need Connecticut pre-licensing education or exams if both conditions are met:
- You held an active Producer license in your former state within 90 days of moving out
- You apply for a Connecticut resident license within 90 days of leaving your former state
- If you do not apply within 90 days, you must complete Connecticut’s pre-licensing education and exam requirements.
Step 3: Complete the Residency Change Request or Letter of Clearance
- After your Connecticut license is approved, submit the Residency Change Request form to update your address/residency:

Please Note: Connecticut does not require a Clearance Letter to become a resident licensee.
PRODUCERS MOVING OUT OF CONNECTICUT (to another State)
When leaving Connecticut, the path depends on your new state’s requirements:
Option 1: If New state does NOT require a Clearance Letter
- Submit the Residency Change Request form to change your Connecticut license from resident to nonresident:

Option 2: If New state requires a Clearance Letter
- Submit the Letter of Clearance Request form to Connecticut:

- Once your new state approves your license, email cid.licensing@ct.gov to convert your Connecticut license to a nonresident license without losing authority.

- Maintain your principal place of business or residence, and
- Are licensed to transact insurance business.
You may only have one resident state for licensing purposes.
