Anchor links let customers jump directly to a specific section on a page -- such as a heading in the middle of the page or a component further down. They help customers navigate long or complex content without scrolling. This article explains what anchor links are and when to use them. For step‑by‑step instructions, see the Anchor Links Job Aid (PDF).
What are anchor links?
Anchor links have two parts:
- An anchor ID: the name assigned to the section you want customers to jump to
- A link: the clickable text or component link that sends customers to that section
When a customer selects the link, the page jumps directly to the section with that anchor ID.
When to use anchor links
Use anchor links when you want customers to:
- Jump to a section further down the same page
- Jump to a section on another page
- Navigate long or complex content more easily
- Avoid scrolling through large blocks of text
Anchor links improve usability and help customers find information faster.
How anchor links work in CT.gov
CT.gov uses a component‑based design. This means:
- Anchor IDs are created on the component or text you want customers to jump to
- Links to anchor IDs can be added from Rich Text or from components with link fields
- You no longer need to rely on Rich Text alone. Many components can now link directly to anchor IDs
This makes anchor links more reliable and easier to maintain.
