Certification requirements for teaching business classes

People who want to teach business (endorsement 010) or marketing (endorsement 089) at a comprehensive middle school or high school must meet these work experience and education requirements: 

Endorsement 010: Business

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution where you majored in
  • Business
  • Or any one subject area covered by the business endorsement
  • Or 39 credit in subjects covered by the business endorsement
• 39 college credits in general education, including:
  • 3+ credit course in U.S. history
  • Course credits in five of the these six areas: natural sciences, social studies, mathematics, English, fine arts, foreign language
• A planned program of preparation for business education, including a minimum of 18 credits in professional education distributed among the following: 
  • Foundations of education, such as philosophy of education, school effectiveness, history of education, and comparative education
  • Educational psychology, such as growth and development children from birth through the life span, psychology of learning, child-adolescent psychology, and mental hygiene
  • Curriculum and methods of teaching, such as subject area curriculum and methodology and effective teaching skills
  • Student teaching (at least 6 but not more than 12 credits)
  • A 36-hour course of study in special education including gifted and talented
• Pass the Praxis II 0101 or 5101 assessment as appropriate
  • Or receive a deferral

Endorsement 089: Marketing

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
• 15 semester hours of credit in marketing fields
• One year of business or marketing work experience
• A letter from your current and/or previous employers verifying your experience in this career
• Six credits in professional education from a regionally accredited college or university
• At least 36 hours in special education studies, including understanding the growth and development of exceptional children (children who are handicapped, gifted, talented, or require special education) and methods for identifying, planning for, and working effectively with them in the regular classroom.
