CONNECTICUT INSURANCE DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS AUTO AND HOME INSURANCE RATE DECREASES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 16, 2026
A review by the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is reporting personal auto and homeowners insurance rate filings with premium decreases for some Connecticut policyholders. While insurance affordability remains a concern, these filings offer examples of relief for some residents.
In a review of recent rate filings, CID identified 19 personal auto insurance filings from 14 companies and 19 homeowners insurance filings from 16 companies that included rate decreases for certain consumers. The filings included decreases from insurers such as Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, Merrimack, Utica, State Farm, and Farmers.
Personal Auto Insurance
Major insurers with filings showing rate decreases for some drivers include State Farm, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, Farmers, Hanover, and Utica. Notable examples include:
- State Farm: Two affiliated companies reported an overall average rate decrease of approximately 8.4%.
- Farmers: Farmers Casualty Insurance Company reported an average rate decrease of approximately 14%.
- Liberty Mutual: A filing for Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance Company reported an average rate decrease of approximately 6% affecting about 11,500 policyholders.
Homeowners Insurance
Several homeowners insurance filings also reflected rate decreases. Liberty Mutual and affiliated companies reduced rates for more than 30,000 homeowners policies, with reported decreases of approximately 5%. Other filings with decreases included those from Nationwide, Merrimack, and Utica.
"Connecticut families continue to face challenges with insurance affordability, so it’s encouraging to see filings that include rate decreases for some policyholders," said Insurance Commissioner Josh Hershman. "These filings are a positive development. The Department will continue working to ensure rates are actuarially justified and reflect the risks being insured. We encourage consumers to ask questions about their coverage and premiums, and to contact CID if they need assistance resolving an insurance issue."
Rate changes vary by insurer, coverage, and other rating factors, so not everyone will see lower premiums. If you have questions about your premium, contact your insurance company or agent for an explanation. Consumers can also review their coverage, ask about available discounts, and compare options from other insurers to find coverage that meets their needs and budget.
