Connecticut Interim Insurance Commissioner Josh Hershman Statement on Insurance Coverage Following CDC Childhood Vaccine Schedule Changes

(HARTFORD, CT) – The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID), Interim Insurance Commissioner Josh Hershman, today issued the following statement regarding recent updates announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to the childhood immunization schedule.

“Parents should be clear on this point: childhood vaccines remain covered by insurance in Connecticut, and nothing about the CDC’s recent announcement changes insurance coverage requirements for childhood vaccinations,” said Interim Insurance Commissioner Josh Hershman.” Families should continue to obtain vaccinations in consultation with their healthcare providers.”

The vaccines referenced in the CDC announcement were not removed from the immunization schedule. Instead, they were moved from a routine recommendation to clinical decision-making recommendation. Because these vaccines remain on the CDC schedule, they continue to be covered by health insurance plans regulated by the CID. Connecticut law also requires that insurance plans regulated by the CID also cover vaccines recommended not only by the CDC but by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. These protections are consistent with federal law, state law, and longstanding insurance practices.

The Connecticut Insurance Department remains in close communication with health insurers and will continue to review data closely to ensure that coverage remains available, insurance markets remain stable, and consumers are protected.

While the Connecticut Insurance Department does not set clinical standards of care, the Department remains focused on ensuring insurance coverage, consumer access, and stability across the healthcare system. Families should continue to seek guidance from licensed medical professionals.

Any Connecticut resident who encounters issues with insurance coverage related to vaccinations should contact the Connecticut Insurance Department’s Consumer Affairs Division for assistance by phone at 800-203-3447 or 860-297-3900, by email at insurance@ct.gov, or online at Connecticut Insurance Department website.
