Insurance Commissioner: Not All Anthem Health Insurance Plans Affected by Big Y Change

Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais said today that Big Y pharmacies may still be in network for some Anthem health insurance plans – including AccessHealth CT plans - depending on the type of plan. In October 2024, Anthem began notifying some members that Big Y pharmacies would no longer be in network beginning Jan. 1, 2025.

“Fully insured plans for individual and small businesses are not affected,” the Commissioner said. “Employer self-funded plans that use Anthem as a third-party administrator are affected by the change. It’s important for consumers to know what type of plan they have.”

In October 2024, Anthem began notifying some members that Big Y pharmacies would no longer be I network beginning Jan. 1, 2025.

Commissioner Mais is advising consumers to check with their employer, check their insurance ID card or call the customer phone number on their insurance card.

Fully insured plans are backed by an insurance policy and provide benefits for a premium that the policyholder pays. The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) has regulatory authority over these plans.

A self-insured plan is generally a group plan offered by an employer, who takes on the risk and pays the claims. The employer will generally contract with a third party, often an insurance company, to administer the plan. These plans are regulated by the U.S. Department of Labor and not the CID.
