CONNECTICUT INSURANCE DEPARTMENT HELPS RECOVER
OVER $49 MILLION IN LIFE INSURANCE BENEFITS FOR CONSUMERS

HARTFORD, CT – Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais (CID) announced that the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) helped consumers find a total policy face amount of more than $49 million from lost or unclaimed life insurance policies in 2023, through the use of the free online Life Insurance Policy Locator tool. Since the tool became available in 2017, CID has facilitated the identification of over $143 million in Matched Policy Face Amount for Connecticut.

“Losing a loved one is already a challenging time, and searching for a missing life insurance policy can add additional stress”, said Commissioner Mais. “Our goal at CID is to alleviate this burden by providing resources like the Locator tool to help consumers find the financial support they deserve.”

Developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the Life Insurance Policy Locator tool helps to connect consumers with lost life insurance policies and annuity contracts of deceased individuals.

Requests made by consumers to locate lost policies are handled confidentially, utilizing encryption and other security measures. Participating insurers compare submitted requests with their policyholder information and report any matches to state insurance departments via the Locator. Within 90 days, insurers contact beneficiaries or their authorized representatives to facilitate the claims process.

If you believe you may be a beneficiary of a lost life insurance policy or have questions about the Locator tool, please visit CID’s Consumer Affairs webpage for assistance.
