Licensee Investigations

The Investigations Unit reviews allegations of misconduct for individual insurance licensees including producers, adjusters, appraisers and surety bail bond agents. The unit levies administrative sanctions against licensees and business entities as necessary and may also make referrals to other agencies. Please note: the unit does not have law enforcement authority.

Referrals are received from insurance companies, other agencies, or internally from the Insurance Department Consumer Services unit.

The Investigations unit promotes prevention, detection, and reporting of insurance fraud through outreach and education. The unit also assists insurers’ special investigative units (SIU’s) and facilitates cooperation and communication among insurers, state and federal agencies, law enforcement, and insurance industry groups.

Enforcement or Administrative Actions

Actions taken against licensees can include fines, probation, suspension or revocation of licenses issued by the Department. Any administrative action taken against licensees by the Connecticut Insurance Department is available by viewing the license. Please visit the NAIC website

Surety Bail Bonds

The unit licenses surety bail bond agents and business entities and conducts investigations of surety bail bond agents when violations of Connecticut Insurance statutes are alleged.

The Department only regulates Surety Bail bond agents. If you need information about professional bail agents or bail “enforcement” agents (BEA’s or Bounty Hunters) please contact the Connecticut State Police (DESPP) special licensing unit: How can I get licensed as a bail bondsman?
