A Designated Responsible Licensed Person (DRLP) is a licensed individual designated by a business entity to be responsible for the entity’s insurance license and regulatory compliance.

For license types issued to business entities, a DRLP ensures there is a properly licensed individual accountable for the entity’s insurance activities.

DRLP Required: YES

Business entities applying for or holding a Casualty Adjuster license must designate at least one DRLP.

The DRLP must:

  • Hold an active Connecticut insurance license (resident or non-resident)
  • Hold a license type that corresponds to the business entity’s license
  • Be listed in the NIPR application/record for the business entity

There is no limit to the number of DRLPs a business entity may designate.

Renewals are processed through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR)

Renewal notices are emailed about 90 days before your expiration date.

Residents and Non-Residents Claiming CT DHS

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility to Renew

  • No Continuing Education (CE) is required for Connecticut Resident Casualty Adjusters prior to renewal.
  • You may only select the “Renew” option in NIPR if you are renewing on or before your license expiration date.
  • If you attempt to renew after your expiration date, the renewal option will no longer be available in NIPR.

Step 2: Renew Through NIPR

Renewals are processed through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR)

If Your License Has Expired

  • If you miss your expiration date, you cannot submit a late renewal.
  • Instead, you must apply for Reinstatement by submitting a new application through NIPR as if applying for a new license.

Refer to the How to Reinstate a License section for additional requirements and instructions.

Non-Residents

To renew a Connecticut Non-Resident Casualty Adjuster license:

  • You must hold an active Adjuster license in your resident/designated home state.
  • No Connecticut Continuing Education is required.
  • Renew through NIPR prior to your expiration date.

If the license expires, you must follow the How to Reinstate a License process and apply as a new applicant through National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR)

Payment Methods

NIPR accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, PayPal, and electronic checks. The Department does not accept cash or paper checks.

Keep Your Contact Information Current

You are responsible for maintaining your email and address in NIPR. Failure to receive a renewal notice does not excuse renewal requirements. Allow 1–2 business days for updates. You cannot update information once a renewal transaction begins.

All amendment requests are submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), unless otherwise noted below.

For Casualty Adjusters, there are four Lines of Authority:

  • All Lines
  • All Lines Except Workers’ Compensation (WC)
  • Workers’ Compensation Only (WC Only)
  • Auto Only

It is important to distinguish between upgrading, downgrading, and adding or removing lines.

Upgrading a License

Upgrading means moving from a lower line of authority to a higher one. Examples include:

  • Auto Only → All Lines Except WC or All Lines
  • WC Only → All Lines Except WC or All Lines
  • All Lines Except WC → All Lines

Residents and Non-Residents Claiming CT DHS:

To upgrade, you must pass the appropriate Connecticut Adjuster exam before applying through NIPR.

Non-Residents:

If eligible through reciprocity, apply for the upgrade through NIPR.

Downgrading a License

Downgrading means moving from a higher line of authority to a lower one. Examples include:

  • All Lines → All Lines Except WC or WC Only or Auto Only
  • All Lines Except WC → WC Only or Auto Only

For Residents, Non-Residents, and Non-Residents Claiming DHS:

To downgrade, email cid.licensing@ct.gov with the subject line: “Downgrade Adjuster”

Adding or Removing Lines

This applies only to the following Lines of Authority:

  • Workers’ Compensation Only (WC Only)
  • Auto Only

These two lines may be held individually or together.

Examples:

  • If you currently hold WC Only and want to add Auto Only
  • If you currently hold Auto Only and want to add WC Only
  • If you currently hold both WC Only and Auto Only and want to remove one of them

Submit your amendment request through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).

Important Clarification:

This add/remove process does not apply to the two higher Lines of Authority:

  • All Lines
  • All Lines Except Workers’ Compensation

These higher authorities already include Auto Only privileges.

All Lines includes Workers’ Compensation.

All Lines Except Workers’ Compensation does not include Workers’ Compensation but does include Auto.

If moving between these higher authorities, refer to the Upgrade or Downgrade instructions above.

Reinstatements are completed through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
