CONNECTICUT INSURANCE DEPARTMENT HELPS CONSUMERS FIND OVER $20 MILLION IN LIFE INSURANCE BENEFITS IN 2024

HARTFORD, CT – The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) today announced that consumers were matched with more than $20 million in life insurance benefits in 2024 using the Life Insurance Policy Locator tool, a free and secure service developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

The Life Insurance Policy Locator is one of many helpful free tools in the CID’s online Consumer Information Center. The center provides consumers with insurance-related information and resources to help easily navigate many of the complexities of all types of insurance – health, auto, homeowners, long-term care and flood insurance.

“We frequently receive questions from consumers who are trying to settle a loved one’s estate but aren’t sure if they left behind a life insurance policy. All of this can come during a difficult and emotional time,” said Commissioner Andrew N. Mais. “The Life Insurance Policy Locator helps eliminate uncertainty and connect people with benefits they may not even know exist.”

Since its launch in 2017, the LIPL tool has helped nearly 8,000 Connecticut consumers locate life insurance and annuity policies and identify more than $93 million for beneficiaries.

By providing some basic information about the deceased, the request triggers a nationwide search among participating insurers. Requests are handled confidentially and securely. Insurers compare their records and report any matches to state insurance departments. If a match is found, the insurer contacts the named beneficiaries directly within 90 days.

In 2024 alone, the Connecticut Insurance Department received 1,767 consumer requests through the free tool, helping families track down life insurance policies that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

“We are pleased we can offer this tool and other easy-to-use resources as part of our mission to support and protect Connecticut consumers,” Commissioner Mais said. “For questions or concerns on any insurance matter, I encourage consumers to visit our Consumer Information Center or contact us directly.
