Protect Yourself from Post-Storm Scams
Recent storms are a reminder that severe weather can leave behind more than property damage. It can also create opportunities for scammers. The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) urges homeowners and renters to use caution when hiring contractors, responding to unsolicited repair offers, or sharing personal and insurance information following a storm.
Following severe weather, scammers often take advantage of the urgency homeowners feel to make repairs. They may pressure consumers to act quickly, request large upfront payments, or offer to handle the insurance claim on the homeowner's behalf before the full extent of the damage has been evaluated.
Watch for These Warning Signs
- Door-to-door contractors offering immediate repairs or claiming to have "extra materials" from another job.
- Pressure to sign a contract or make an immediate decision.
- Requests for full payment or a large cash deposit before work begins.
- Requests to sign over your insurance claim or benefits.
- Offers to waive or cover your insurance deductible.
- Refusal to provide proof of licensing, insurance, or references.
- High-pressure sales tactics or claims that an offer is only available "today."
Protect Yourself After a Storm
- Contact your insurance company before making permanent repairs unless immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage.
- Document all damage with photographs or video before cleanup begins.
- Obtain written estimates from multiple contractors whenever possible.
- Verify that contractors are properly licensed and insured.
- Never feel pressured to sign a contract on the spot.
- Read all contracts carefully before signing and keep copies of all paperwork.
- Avoid paying the full cost of repairs upfront.
Be Careful with Insurance-Related Offers
Only discuss your claim with your insurance company or authorized representatives. Be cautious of anyone who claims they can "guarantee" claim approval, inflate repair costs, or promises a larger insurance settlement.
If someone claims to represent your insurance company, verify their identity by contacting your insurer directly using the phone number listed on your policy or the company's official website.
