What Connecticut Residents Should Know About Flood Insurance Costs

Flooding can happen anywhere in Connecticut during heavy rain, coastal storms, and periods of rapid runoff. Understanding your flood risk and the insurance coverage available to you is an important part of being prepared.

Explore Your Flood Insurance Options

Flood insurance is available through both the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and private insurers. Private flood insurance may offer different types of coverage, limits, deductibles, and pricing. Consumers should compare coverage options and talk with their insurance agent or broker about any additional options that may be available in the private flood insurance market.

Most homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover damage caused by flooding. Flood insurance is a separate policy, and there is often a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins, so it’s important to explore your options before a storm or flooding event occurs.

Flood Insurance Costs Vary by Property

Flood insurance premiums are based on the individual characteristics of each property. Costs can differ depending on factors such as the level of flood risk, the type and amount of coverage chosen, and the deductible. Community or statewide averages may not reflect what a specific homeowner will pay, especially in areas with fewer NFIP policies.

The best way to understand your potential cost is to speak with your insurance agent or broker about your property, your coverage needs, and any flood insurance options that may be available to you.

Know Your Flood Risk

Even properties outside designated high-risk flood zones can experience flooding. Just one inch of water can cause $25,000 or more in damages to your property. Your property can still be at risk. Heavy rainfall, backed-up drainage systems, overflowing rivers and streams, and coastal storms can cause flooding across Connecticut.
