Travel Insurance Coverage and International Travel Disruptions

The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is sharing information to help consumers better understand how travel insurance may apply during international travel disruptions, including those related to armed conflict.

Recent global events have resulted in flight cancellations and travel delays affecting travelers around the world. Some consumers may expect that travel insurance will cover additional expenses such as replacement flights, hotels, or other costs when trips are disrupted. However, coverage depends on the specific terms and conditions of the travel insurance policy.

Under many travel insurance policies, certain events may be excluded from coverage. Consumers should carefully review their policy documents to understand what is and is not covered.

Here is what Connecticut consumers should know:

  • Travel insurance policies vary. Coverage is determined by the specific terms, conditions, and exclusions outlined in the policy.
  • Most travel insurance policies include exclusions for losses directly related to war or armed conflict. Consumers should review their policy language to understand how these exclusions may apply.
  • Some policies may offer optional coverage, such as “cancel for any reason” benefits, which may reimburse a portion of prepaid travel costs. These benefits typically have limitations and conditions.
  • If travel is disrupted, consumers should first contact their airline, travel provider, or travel insurance company to understand available options and next steps.
  • Consumers should keep receipts and documentation for any travel-related expenses or communications with airlines or insurers.

Consumers who have questions about travel insurance coverage or who need assistance resolving an issue with an insurance company may contact the Connecticut Insurance Department Consumer Affairs Division by email at insurance@ct.gov, by phone at 860-297-3900, or by visiting the CID website.
