Life Insurance Policy Locator Helps Consumers Find Lost Life Insurance Benefits

Losing a loved one can be a difficult time, and locating important financial documents can add additional stress. The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is reminding consumers about the Life Insurance Policy Locator (LIPL). This free and secure online tool can help beneficiaries locate lost life insurance policies and annuity contracts.

Developed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the Life Insurance Policy Locator allows consumers to submit information about a deceased family member or loved one. Participating insurance companies then search their records to determine whether a policy or annuity contract exists. The tool is one of several resources available through CID’s Consumer Information Center, which provides clear, easy-to-understand insurance guidance to help consumers make informed decisions.

Who Can Use the Life Insurance Policy Locator?

The Life Insurance Policy Locator may help consumers who:

  • Believe a deceased loved one may have had a life insurance policy or annuity contract but cannot find the policy documents.
  • Are unsure which insurance company issued a policy.
  • Need help determining whether they may be entitled to benefits from a policy.

The tool is intended for locating policies or annuity contracts belonging to individuals who have passed away. It cannot be used to search for a policy belonging to a living person.

How Does the Life Insurance Policy Locator Work?

To submit a request, consumers provide information about themselves and the deceased individual, including:

  1. Name
  2. Date of birth
  3. Date of death
  4. Social Security number or taxpayer identification number, if available
  5. Relationship to the deceased individual

Requests are submitted through a secure, encrypted system. Insurance companies participating in the program review submitted information against their records and notify state insurance departments when a potential match is identified.

If a policy or annuity contract is located and the requester is identified as a beneficiary or authorized representative, the insurance company will contact the individual directly to provide additional information about the claim process.

What Should Consumers Know?

  • The Life Insurance Policy Locator does not guarantee that a policy or annuity contract will be found.
  • Consumers may not receive a response if no matching policy is located or if they are not the beneficiary or authorized representative.
  • Searches may take up to 90 days or longer depending on the information available and insurer response times.
  • Consumers should keep their contact information updated after submitting a request so insurers can reach them if a match is found.
