What Connecticut Residents Should Know About Insurance Before This Weekend’s Storm

The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is urging residents to review their insurance coverage and take steps to protect their homes and property ahead of a strong coastal storm expected to impact the state beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend. The storm may bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding, making it important to prepare now.

Review Your Insurance Coverage

  • Your coverage limits and deductibles.
  • Whether your policy covers wind and other storm‑related damage.
  • How your policy applies if a tree damages your home, vehicle, or other property.
  • Whether you have coverage for additional living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to covered damage.
  • What exclusions or limitations apply to your policy, including flood coverage.
  • Remember: Flood damage is not typically covered by standard homeowners insurance.

If you have questions about your coverage, contact your insurance agent or company before the storm.

Take Steps to Protect Your Property

  • Secure or bring inside outdoor furniture, decorations, trash bins, and other items that could be blown away.
  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage.
  • Check that sump pumps and other storm‑related equipment are working.
  • Move vehicles to higher ground or away from trees if flooding or falling limbs are a concern.
  • Take photos or video of your home and belongings, especially high‑value items or areas most vulnerable to damage.
  • Create a home inventory to make filing a claim easier if damage occurs.
