Federal Government Shutdown Impact: Flood Insurance

Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) Advising Consumers to Monitor Flood Policy Expiration, Consider Private Plans

Due to the federal government shutdown and lapse in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) reauthorization, state Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais is advising consumers with flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to monitor their policy expiration dates and check the private market for coverage if needed.

“Should anything go wrong during the renewal process, it’s very likely no NFIP support staff are available to address those issues in a timely manner,” the Commissioner said. “It is critical not to let this important property protection lapse.”

At this time, the NFIP cannot issue new policies or renew existing policies until Congress reauthorizes the program. Existing policies remain in effect until their expiration date, and claims will continue to be paid as long as program funds are available.

The Commissioner encourages anyone interested in flood insurance for their property to consider alternatives in the private sector. Over the past several years, more and more commercial carriers are entering the flood insurance market.

Consumers should check with their agents or insurance company to discuss availability of private flood insurance.
