Be Weather Ready - Protect What Matters Most
Hurricane Season & Flood Risk: What You Need to Know
The 6-month-long Atlantic Hurricane Season began June 1, but peak activity for Connecticut and the rest of New England is now – mid-August to mid-October.
Hurricanes aren’t just a coastal threat. The heavy rains of a hurricane can lead to significant flood damage even in areas not usually affected. Flooding is one of the most common and costly risks we face, but standard homeowners, renters, and business insurance policies do not cover flood damage.
Review Your Policy for Coverage and Deductibles
Are you prepared to protect what matters most? Before a storm hits, review your homeowner’s, renter’s or condo policy to understand what the policy covers and what it doesn’t..
It’s also important to know if your policy has a wind or hurricane deductible, which are generally calculated based on a percentage of the home’s insured value. If you’re not sure, call your agent or check the declaration page on your policy. The declaration page is generally the first or second page of your policy and shows the kinds and amounts coverage you have and what your deductibles are.
Hurricane deductibles can only be applied in certain circumstances related to the storm. Generally, an insurer may impose a hurricane deductible when a hurricane warning is issued in any part of the state and has maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or more.
