The Secretary of the State invites the fifth grade students in your school to participate in its annual Connecticut Essay/PowerPoint Contest.

This contest is designed to support the fifth grade study of Connecticut. Its objectives are to stimulate pride in Connecticut, heighten awareness of our state’s many historical, cultural and entertainment offerings, encourage good citizenship, and reinforce creative writing skills or possibly their computer skills. This contest will provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skill as part of an exciting statewide program.

The topic for the 2013 essay/PowerPoint contest is: "Discuss an important event or invention from Connecticut that has significantly affected the history of our state. How is the impact of this event or invention still felt today?"

Contest Timeline:

  • March 18, 2013 - Must be postmarked, hand delivered or emailed to diana.theriault@ct.gov
  • April 1, 2013 - Judging deadline.
  • April 15, 2013 - Winners will be posted on the SOTS website.
  • May 17, 2013 - Award Ceremony held in the Old Judiciary Room at the Capitol.

Guidelines and Information for ESSAY submissions:

  • Student(s) must be a current 5th grader in the State of Connecticut.
  • An ENTRY FORM must be sent in with each essay. If you are sending in multiple essays you may send in one ENTRY FORM per package/envelope. A maximum of 25 essays may be sent in from each school.
  • No more than one student may work on an essay.
  • Paper size must be 8 ½ x 11 or 11 x 17 (this will allow us to scan the winning essays and display them on our website).
  • Essays must be one page (one sided only) and may be typed or hand written neatly in pen.
  • Essays will not be returned so please make a copy prior to mailing them in.
  • The following information must be typed or hand written in the upper right corner of the submission:
    • Student’s Name
    • School’s Name
    • Congressional District in which your school is located (1-5)

Guidelines and Information for PowerPoint submissions:

  • Student(s) must be a current 5th grader in the State of Connecticut.
  • An ENTRY FORM must be emailed or sent in with each PowerPoint presentation to diana.theriault@ct.gov. A maximum of 25 PowerPoint presentations may be submitted by each school.
  • No more than one student may work on a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Each PowerPoint presentation may be up to a maximum of 5 slides.
  • Entries may be made in the form of a PowerPoint file (.ppt; .pptx) and either mailed via CD or emailed to diana.theriault@ct.gov.
  • If submissions are mailed in they will not be returned so please make a copy prior to mailing them in.
  • The following information must be included with the PowerPoint file/disc :
    • Student’s Name
    • School’s Name
    • Congressional District in which your school is located (1-5)

General FAQ’s and Information for contest submissions:

  • Schools are allowed to submit a combined total of 25 Essays and PowerPoint presentations and should send all submissions the same way, either hand delivered, by mail or email.
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd and two honorable mentions will be chosen from each Congressional District by our judges.
  • Essay and PowerPoint submissions will be judged together and are not two separate contests
  • Judging will be based on originality, creativity and overall quality.
  • The contact person listed on the ENTRY FORM will be notified if one of their submissions is selected.
  • The winning Essay(s) or PowerPoint(s) will be available to view on the SOTS website.
  • An award ceremony will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 where the winning students will receive a $30 gift card.

Mailing Checklist:

  • In the upper right corner of the essay or disc please write: Student’s name, school name, and Congressional District.
