The Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) & the Pediatric Surveillance System (PedNSS) are program-based public health surveillance systems that monitor nutritional status – as well as selected health and behavioral risk factors associated with infant mortality and poor birth outcomes – among low-income women, infants and children in federally funded maternal and child health programs across the country.

PNSS data represent approximately 1.3 million pregnant and postpartum women from 30 states, the District of Columbia, six tribal governments and one U.S. territory; PedNSS data represent over 8 million children from birth to age 5 nationwide.

These two surveillance systems provide useful data for purposes of:

  • program planning, management, and evaluation;
  • the development of health and nutrition interventions;
  • tracking progress toward the nation's Healthy People 2010 objectives;
  • and, comparing different programs, populations, time periods & geographic areas.

Table surveillance

Nationwide, all PNSS data and over 85% of PedNSS data, come from the WIC Program; in the case of Connecticut, all data reported in the PNSS & PedNSS surveillance systems are from the State’s WIC Program.  Click on any active link, below, to access that year’s data.
