Avian influenza (H5N1): What you need to know

Bird flu is a disease that usually spreads between wild birds, not people. In March of 2024, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that they had also found H5N1 infected cows at a dairy farm in Texas.

Since the spring of 2024, some human H5N1 infections have been reported in the United States. No person to person spread of H5N1 has been detected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to assess the risk to the general public as low.
