Welcome to the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Middlesex.

The State’s Attorney's office is responsible for the prosecution of all criminal offenses which occur in the Judicial District, which includes the communities of Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Middlefield, Middletown, Old Saybrook, Portland and Westbrook.

The Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Middlesex office located at Middletown Superior Court prosecutes the more serious cases, mostly those crimes classified under state law as class A or class B felony offenses, from all communities in the Judicial District.

The Geographical Area office, located at the "Part B" Superior Court in Middletown, primarily prosecutes cases involving crimes classified under state law as class C, class D or class E felony offenses as well as all misdemeanor offenses and infractions, including motor vehicle offenses.

State’s Attorney Michael A. Gailor

State’s Attorney Michael A. Gailor was appointed by the Criminal Justice Commission as the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Middlesex on July 25, 2018. State’s Attorney Gailor currently serves as the chief law enforcement officer in the District, which includes the city of Middletown and the towns of Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Middlefield, Old Saybrook, Portland and Westbrook.

State’s Attorney Gailor joined the Division of Criminal Justice in 1993 as a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in the Statewide Prosecution Bureau where he prosecuted cases all over the state. In 1995, he transferred to the Judicial District of Hartford where he handled all manner of criminal cases, including those charging murder, sexual assault, assault and robbery.

In 2005, State’s Attorney Gailor was appointed Executive Assistant State’s Attorney and oversaw the investigation and prosecution of complex multijurisdictional cases around the state, including those involving violent crimes and political corruption. He also provided training to both prosecutors and the police, worked on legislative matters and handled numerous administrative responsibilities.

State’s Attorney Gailor earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Cornell University and his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. After law school, State’s Attorney Gailor spent one year clerking for the Honorable Flemming T. Norcott on the state Appellate Court and two years clerking for the Honorable Thomas P. Smith, Magistrate Judge, in the United States District Court, District of Connecticut. Between the clerkships, he worked for two years as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Hartford, Inc. where he represented indigent individuals who had been convicted of crimes and were seeking redress by way of writ of habeas corpus.

State’s Attorney Gailor is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Law where he has taught legal writing and appellate advocacy and serves as the director of the Prosecutor’s Externship program which provides instruction on the ethical obligations and the role of the prosecutor in the criminal justice system and oversees the placement of law students as interns in offices around the state.

State’s Attorney Gailor is active in community organizations and regularly provides training to police officers and fire marshals on a host of legal issues. He currently serves as president of the Connecticut Criminal Justice Educational and Charitable Association.

At the Division, State’s Attorney Gailor serves on the Legislative and Training Committees, the DNA Data Bank Oversight Committee, the Evidence Code Committee, the Criminal Justice Information System Legal Committee, the Racial Profiling Prohibition Project Advisory Committee and the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Methodology Program Advisory Board. He was also the leader of the Division’s advisory board on the development of the Division’s case management system.
