Teacher of the Year Ceremony

Due to inclement weather, the Teacher of the Year Ceremony has been postponed to December 16, 2025 from 5-7pm. Doors will open at 4pm. The Ceremony will take place at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford, and the order of events will remain the same.

Requirements for certification as a reading and language arts consultant

People who want to become a certified reading and language arts consultant (endorsement 097) must meet these work experience and education requirements:

  • Complete a state-approved planned program of educator preparation at a regionally accredited college or university, leading to a formal institutional recommendation for certification. The institution will outline specific courses required for the required institutional recommendation for certification.
  • Master's degree
  • 30 school months of successful teaching experience
  • Undergraduate or graduate course work in each of the following areas:
    • Curriculum
    • Psychology, including human growth and development, understanding human behavior, personality, mental hygiene
    • Children's or adolescent literature
  • Passing score on the Pearson Reading Specialist Test
  • Holds or is eligible for a remedial reading and remedial language arts endorsement
  • Institutional recommendation based on completion of a state-approved certification program specific to special service in remedial reading and language arts, including at least 12 semester hours of graduate credit with coursework in each of the following areas: 
    • Advanced reading and language arts diagnosis
    • Organization, administration and supervision of reading and language arts programs
    • Practicum in consulting, including applied research, of at least six semester hours' credit in total 
  • Ten school months as a remedial reading and remedial language arts teacher 
  • A course of study in special education comprising 36 clock hours or more that includes study in:
    • Understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education
    • Methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom
