What teaching certificates are available to teachers from other states?

Certifications and permits available to teachers from other states

Connecticut offers out-of-state educators multiple paths to getting certification or authorization to work in Connecticut schools.

Initial Educator Certificate

This 3-year certificate is for people who:

  • Completed a state-approved planned program resulting in an institutional recommendation for certification

OR

  • Have at least two years of successful, appropriate teaching experience in one school/district and have completed appropriate coursework and assessments

Provisional Educator Certificate

This 8-year certificate is for people who:

  • Completed a regionally approved educator preparation program and have at least 20 school months of successful, appropriate teaching experience under a valid certificate within the previous ten years

OR

  • Completed 30 or more school months of successful out-of-state service within the previous ten years under a valid certificate from that state. If you have this experience, you won’t have to take an assessment test. 

Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP)

This 1-year permit is for people who:

  • Earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Completed 12 credit hours in the subject area
  • Are enrolled in a CT-approved educator preparation program or cross-endorsement program
  • Have an ED 177 - Evidence of Enrollment form completed by both their hiring district and the university’s certification office, and then mailed to us

Interim Non-Renewable Initial Certificate

This 3-year certificate is for people who completed a regionally approved educator preparation program. You will have three years to pass required assessments.

Interim Non-Renewable Provisional Certificate

This 3-year certificate is for people who:

  • Completed a regionally approved educator preparation program
  • Completed 20 or more school months of successful out-of-state service under a valid certificate from that state

You will have three years to pass required assessments.

Interim Initial Certificate

This 1-year certificate is for people who meet occupational requirements for a vocational certificate but haven’t completed professional education course work. You will have one year to complete outstanding coursework.

Military Spouse Teacher Permit

This 3-year permit is for people who:

  • Are married to a service member who has received military orders directing them to Connecticut
  • Have two or more years of teaching experience under an appropriate certificate in another state(s)
  • Have completed a special education course that includes gifted and talented students

Educators are exempt from the TEAM program.

 

Educators from Other States
