Connecticut faces various types of potential disasters, such as severe weather events and pandemics, that could have significant impacts. It is crucial to evaluate your Homeowner, Renters', or Condominium insurance policy annually, especially before the Atlantic Tropical Storm season begins on June 1st. Review your policy with your agent, a company representative or contact the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) to understand what is covered and what your coverage limits are to ensure you are adequately protected.
The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) provides year-round resources to assist you in preparing for the worst and recovering as quickly as possible. In the event of a disaster, CID will:
- Keep you informed about your insurer.
- Collaborate with state and federal emergency personnel to facilitate insurers' rapid response to damaged areas.
- Expedite the claims process to help you recover losses and rebuild your life and livelihood.
What’s The Risk
If it rains, it can flood. Even if you think your property is at a low risk for flooding, it is always a good idea to prepare for the worst.
Traditional homeowner’s, renter’s and business insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a special policy federally backed by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Private flood insurance also is now available in Connecticut. For more information on private flood insurance contact your agent or the Insurance Department.

Be Prepared:
Before the Flood:
- Know what your policies cover
- Create a home inventory

- Store policies and insurer contact info in safe place
- Make an emergency kit
- Have a family evacuation plan
After the Flood:
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible
- Take photos of the damage
- DO NOT make permanent repairs until your insurer has inspected the property
- Keep a diary of all contact, conversations with your insurer
