For Carriers: Catastrophe Adjuster Registration

  1. How is a Catastrophe Adjuster (CAT) different from a CT Licensed Adjuster?

    A Catastrophe Adjuster (CAT) is an adjuster approved by an insurance company for a span of 120 days after a catastrophic event.

    To get this registration, you must either have a license in another state or have worked as an adjuster for at least two years.

    A Connecticut Licensed Adjuster is licensed by the CT Department of Insurance for the standard adjuster license term. CT Licensed Adjusters have the authority to handle emergency claims. To handle catastrophe claims, an insurance company does not need to register them for a storm. Adjusters who are licensed in CT do not need to get a CAT registration.

  2. How does an insurance company register a Catastrophe Adjuster?

    An approved insurance company representative must register an adjuster to work on their behalf in the State of Connecticut through the Catastrophe Licensing Program. The CID Commissioner must first declare that the storm qualifies for the catastrophe licensing program.

  3. Can anyone from an insurance company register Catastrophe Adjusters with the State of Connecticut?

    No, only registered employees of an insurance company can register adjusters.

  4. Can CAT adjusters handle claims before they are registered?

    No.

  5. What qualifications must an adjuster have for an insurance company agent to sign them up?

    The adjuster must EITHER have an active adjuster's license in another state OR prove that they have worked as an adjuster for at least two years.

  6. Must a Catastrophe Adjuster wear photo identification while adjusting claims?

    Yes, the company must give each person a photo ID that they must always wear while working on claims.

  7. Do I need a Catastrophe registration if I have a valid Connecticut Adjuster License??

    No, you don't need a Catastrophe registration if you already have a Connecticut Department of Insurance license.

  8. I am a Public Adjuster; can I obtain a Catastrophe license?

    Only Public Adjusters with licenses from the Connecticut Department of Insurance will be allowed to work in the state.

  9. What is the fee for a Catastrophe registration?

    No fees are required.

  10. I have a Producer Property and Casualty license. Can I adjust claims?
     
    Connecticut Regulations (38a-792-3) state that any Connecticut-licensed Property and Casualty Producer of any insurance company can settle property damage claims less than $1,500.

  13. I don't want a Catastrophe License. I want to get a Connecticut Property and Casualty Claims Adjuster License. Where do I fill out this application?

    Individual licenses: Go to nipr.com/products-and-services/nipr-gateway.

    Business entity licenses: Go to nipr.com/products-and-services/nipr-gateway/business-entity. Click "Apply for a License" under "Licensing Center."

    The licensing fee is $130.00.

  14. Can I get a Catastrophe Adjuster License for my business? 

    No. Only individuals can register for a Catastrophe Adjuster License. You can apply for a business entity license at nipr.com/products-and-services/nipr-gateway. Under licensing center, click "Apply for a License."

  15. I hold an individual license in another state but don't have a Connecticut Adjuster License. How do I get a license to work as a Catastrophe Adjuster?

    Your company needs to register you. You can't get a registration on your own.

  16. We are a third-party licensing vendor. How do we register adjusters for the Catastrophe registration?

    The insurance company must register each individual. A third-party vendor cannot register individual adjusters.

  17. Does my company have to register me for each storm separately?

    Yes, your company must register you for each storm separately.
