Public Adjuster (Individual & Business Entity)

Definition

PUBLIC ADJUSTER – Any person who or which practices, as a business, the adjusting of loss or damage by fire, or other hazard, under any policies, on behalf of the insured, or who advertises or solicits business or holds themselves out to the public as engaging in such adjusting as a business. Lawyers settling claims of clients shall not be deemed to be insurance adjusters.

Fees

Initial: $300.00
Reinstatement: $300.00
Renewal: $250.00
No pro-rating, non-refundable $50.00 application fee.

Duration

Two (2) years – Expires April 30th every EVEN year.

How to Apply

Residents:

  • Completion of a Pre-licensing course is required before taking the Public Adjuster exam.
  • Candidates are required to present either the pre-licensing education certificate or pre-licensing waiver letter at the exam center.
  • Download the Candidate Handbook and schedule the exam.
  • After passing the exam, apply by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).
    (Note: you do not need to submit the "passed" examination report, the Department will verify this information with our vendor)

Non-Residents:

Designated Responsible Licensed Person (DRLP)

Business Entities Only: All states require that business entities or agencies appoint a licensed producer or responsible person to serve as the agency's authority. The Designated Responsible Licensed Producer/Person (DRLP) must hold an active Connecticut license, whether resident or non-resident. While the lines of authority between the business entity and the DRLP need not match exactly, the license types must correspond.

There are no restrictions on the number of DRLPs that can be included on a license.
