You can add links to pages, files, or documents inside or outside your Sitecore site. Links can be added in:
- the Rich Text Editor
- a text field that includes a link toolbar
- components that provide link fields
These are the three types of link actions you can perform:
Note: select Lock and Edit to check out and edit the page.

Accessibility requirement: Use descriptive link text
Link text must clearly describe the destination or action. Avoid vague phrases like “click here” or “read more.” Review the accessibility standards for descriptive links section.

Add an internal link
Internal links are preferred because they automatically update if the page moves.
Add an internal link in the Rich Text Editor
- Highlight the text you want to hyperlink.

- Click the Insert Sitecore Link icon
. - In the Insert Link box, use the content tree to find your page (or choose the media tab if linking to an image or file in the media library).

- Click Insert.
- Click Accept at the bottom of the Rich Text Editor box.
- Save
your changes. - Select the Unlock
icon to check on your page if you are done editing.
To change the link, clear the link by clicking the broken link icon, then follow the same steps above.
Add an internal link from a text field
- Highlight the text.
- A toolbar will appear. Click the Link icon

- Follow the same steps covered above.
NOTE: To remove the link you must use the rich text editor.
Add an internal link inside a component
Many components include built‑in link fields. Use these instead of adding links inside component text fields.
How to add a link inside a component
- Open the component from the folder in the Content Editor.
- In the Content area look for a field labeled "Link".
- Click Insert Sitecore Link.
- Navigate to and choose the internal page.
- Save
your changes. - Select the Unlock
icon to check on your page if you are done editing.
Note: Do not add links inside the component's rich text editor if you can avoid it. This keeps layouts consistent and avoids accessibility issues.
Add an external link
Use external links only when the destination is outside your Sitecore site.
- Highlight the text you want to link.

Click the Hyperlink Manager icon

- Fill out the following fields:
- URL - Enter the full website address (example: http://www.google.com)
- Link Text - Populated with highlighted text
- Target - Same Window
- Leave the other fields blank.
- Click OK.
- Click Accept.
- Save
your changes. - Click the Unlock
icon in the Home tab in the ribbon to check on your page if you are done editing.
To change the link, follow the same steps.

Remove an internal link (Rich Text Editor only)
- Highlight the linked text you want to remove the link from.
- Click the Remove Link icon
. - Click Accept.
- Save
your changes. - Select the Unlock
icon to check on your page if you are done editing.
Remove external link
- Highlight the linked text you want to remove the link from.
- Click the Remove Link icon
and the link will be removed from the text. - Click Accept.
- Save
your changes. - Select the Unlock
icon to check in your page if you are done editing.
✅ Best practices
- Only link to pages that exist.
- Use clear, descriptive link text like “How to Publish in Sitecore” instead of vague phrases like “click here.”
- Use internal links when possible - they're safer and update automatically.
