How to access the data you are looking for?

The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) provides statistical data from Connecticut’s statewide vital records registries, including births, deaths, fetal deaths, and marriages.

Before submitting a data request, please review the information below to determine whether the data you need are already available through DPH reports or whether you need to submit a data request. Statistical data available online



Annual statistics for births, deaths, fetal deaths, and marriages from 1992 to the present are available through the Connecticut Registration Reports.

These reports provide statistics on vital events and associated demographic and health characteristics for the state, counties or planning regions, health districts, and towns.

Requesting vital records data from DPH

The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) provides aggregate or identifiable vital records data when not available in published reports, though some data are restricted by law. Requirements vary by event type, and all requests must be submitted using the correct form. Processing fees apply, and data are released once payment is received; questions may be directed to DPH by phone or email.

If the data you need are not available through DPH's published reports, you may submit a request for aggregate or identifiable data, depending on the type of information needed and applicable state and federal requirements.

Aggregate data

Aggregate data are data that have been combined, summarized, or otherwise presented in a manner that does not identify an individual or organization described in the data.

Identifiable data

Identifiable data are individual data elements, records, or combinations of data that identify, or could reasonably be used to identify, an individual or organization supplying or described in the data.

Not all data are eligible for release. Data elements whose release is prohibited or restricted by state or federal law will not be provided. Social Security numbers (SSNs) contained in vital event records cannot be released except to state and federal agencies authorized by federal law.

The type of data available depends on the vital event type.

Birth or Fetal Death data

Connecticut birth and fetal death data are confidential and are available only to eligible parties and for permitted purposes.

  • Aggregate data: Requests for aggregate data must be reviewed and approved by DPH.
  • Identifiable data: Requests for identifiable data for medical or research purposes must follow the requirements of the Human Investigations Committee.

Death data

Death data may be requested as either aggregate data or individual records.

Marriage data

Marriage data may be requested as aggregate data only.

If the data you need are not available through DPH's published reports, complete the appropriate data request form and submit it to DPH.VitalStats@ct.gov.

Data request forms

DPH will review your request and determine whether the requested data can be provided and whether additional documentation or approvals are required.

If your request is approved, DPH will provide information about any applicable fees and payment requirements.

Fees

The Office of Vital Records charges a $50 per hour processing fee for data requests.

After receiving your request, an analyst will estimate the processing time and provide an estimated fee using the contact information provided on your request form.

The final fee may be higher or lower than the estimate, depending on the actual time required to complete the request.

Payment is required before data requests are released. Payment must be made by money order or corporate check. Personal checks are not accepted.
