Vital statistics and population health data

Welcome to vital statistics data and reports

Vital statistics are fundamental to understanding the health of Connecticut residents. These statistics - covering births, deaths, and marriages - serve as the evidence base for effective public health policy and planning. They illuminate key trends, identify health disparities, and measure the impact of interventions, ensuring resources are directed where they are needed most to protect and improve the health and safety of the state's residents.

Registration reports and tables

Data collected through the vital records registries are analyzed annually to create statistical reports on the number of events and associated demographic and health information. In Connecticut, these vital statistics reports are known as Registration Reports.

Vital Statistics detail the event counts of births, deaths, fetal deaths, and marriages by location and demographics (age, race and ethnicity, etc.). They provide official state rates for infant mortality, low birthweight, fertility, leading causes of death, and other health indicators.

Data requests

Requesting custom datasets

Custom data can be requested from the Surveillance Analysis and Reporting (SAR) Unit by completing a Data Request Form and emailing it to DPH.vitalstats@ct.gov.

Available death files contain de-identified death records (age, sex, race/ethnicity, residence town/state, place of death type/town/state, and cause of death) for deaths that occurred in Connecticut.

The Human Investigations Committee (HIC) fulfills the role of the Department of Public Health’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Any requests for access to identifiable or record-level data for medical or scientific research must go through the HIC.
