Registration reports, mortality statistics, population estimates, and hospitalization statistics

The Vital Statistics Archive includes all tables and reports published before 2010. Each year, Connecticut analyzes vital records data to produce the Registration Reports, which summarize key health events such as births, deaths, fetal deaths, and marriages, along with related demographic and health information.

Mortality tables provide information on death trends, including age-adjusted death rates, years of potential life lost, and comparisons across time and population groups. Additional mortality data briefs focus on topics such as COVID-19 deaths and deaths from unintentional injuries.

Population estimates are available at the state, county, and town levels to support demographic and public health analysis.

Hospitalization data are used to measure morbidity (illness and injury in the population) and track how often people require hospital care. These data include counts, rates, length of stay, charges, and diagnosis codes. Together, these measures help monitor trends over time and support public health planning and resource allocation.

Our General Archive includes all digitally available data from prior to 2010.

Vital Statistics/Registration Reports provide comprehensive statistics related to the number of events by town and county of residence or occurrence, demographics such as age or race/ethnicity, risk factors, health outcomes, and rates and prevalence of select health indicators. These reports provide the official state rates for several key public health indicators, including infant mortality, low birthweight and preterm birth, fertility, and leading causes of death.

Age-adjusted mortality rate (AAMR) and Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL) tables for 1989-1998 are available for 62 causes of death. Data are presented for all Connecticut residents, for males and females, and by race/ethnicity. AAMR and YPLL rates are age-adjusted using three different standards (1940, 1970, and 2000 standard populations) and are available for single and multiple years. All tables include statistical comparisons with an earlier time period.

Some of the tables below (AAMR/YPLL summary tables for 1996-1998 by sex and race/ethnicity) are also available as a single pdf (Appendix VII-B of the Mortality report).

Mortality and Its Risk Factors in Connecticut: 1989-1998 report

COVID-19 Mortality by Demographics, March 1, 2020-February 28, 2021:

Connecticut’s COVID-19-related mortality by age, sex, and race and ethnicity during the first twelve months of the pandemic in the state (March 1, 2020–February 28, 2021). Counts, rates, and disparity ratios were calculated for deaths with COVID-19 as a primary or contributing cause of death on the death certificate.

This analysis of COVID-19 mortality patterns builds on the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s regular COVID-19 reporting. It provides additional insight into how COVID-19 deaths have occurred over time and across different groups in the state. This work also supports the department’s ongoing efforts to identify and address health inequities among Connecticut residents, whether they are related to social conditions or underlying health factors.

Unintentional Injury Mortality Trends by Subcause, 2000-2020:

Deaths due to unintentional injuries, commonly referred to as accidental deaths, have increased dramatically in Connecticut over the past decade. Unintentional injury was the only leading cause of death for which Connecticut’s rate was higher than the U.S. rate for more than five years as of data year 2020.

The Mortality and Its Risk Factors in Connecticut: 1989-1998 report (Full Report, 289p, 16MB) examines mortality trends and risk factors for 25 leading causes of death among Connecticut residents by gender, race/ethnicity, and age for the ten-year period 1989 to 1998. Mortality and premature mortality trends are examined for both males and females and for these racial and ethnic sub-populations: Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander, Native American, and White. The report also charts Connecticut’s progress over time in relation to U.S. mortality and the Healthy People 2000 and Healthy Connecticut target objectives.
The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide count of the population every 10 years, known as the decennial census. Because it is designed to provide an actual count of the population rather than an estimate, the decennial census is a key source of population data for Connecticut.
The Census 2010 collected population counts and demographic characteristics of the Nation and its component geographies as of April 1, 2010. Census 2010 marks the first decennial census that does not use a long form to collect social and economic data.

Estimates of the resident population of Connecticut as of July 1 are tabulated by:

  • 169 towns (also known as MCDs),
  • 18 five-year age group (0-4, 5-9, 10-14 … 85 years and over),
  • 2 sexes (male, female), and
  • 5 bridged-race/ethnicity categories (White, Black, Am.Indian, Asian/PI, Hispanic/Latino).
Hospitalization refers to any discharge from a non-federal, short-stay, acute-care, general hospital in Connecticut. Hospitalizations are expressed as numbers of discharges, not as unduplicated patients; a single patient with multiple hospitalizations can thus be counted more than once. Hospital discharges are recorded in the state’s hospital discharge abstract and billing database, which is maintained by the Connecticut Office of Health Strategy.
