File a Vehicle or Boat Repossession Complaint

The Department of Banking pursues complaints when the lender of a loan/retail installment contract repossesses a car or boat. In addition to the highlights listed below, there are many more rights and protections for Connecticut residents concerning the repossession of a car. Contact our Consumer Affairs Division to learn more. Toll-free: 1-877-472-8313

How do I submit a complaint?

Your vehicle can be repossessed if you are in default (missed a payment on your loan). The repossession of a car follows one of the following three scenarios. Your rights are determined according to the timeframe when you receive a Repossession Notice.

Depending on the circumstances, you may not be given a notice of the repossession. In the case of a car repossession without the knowledge of the buyer, the lender needs to notify the local    police department that the lender repossessed the car within two hours after the repossession.

If you have any questions about a repossession in Connecticut, please contact the Department of Banking Consumer Affairs Division at our toll-free number above or file a complaint by filling out a DOB Online Consumer Assistance Form.

Review the following information:
