Consumer Information

The Department of Banking is committed to educating the public about the banking industry and consumer credit issues, and helping Connecticut consumers make well-informed decisions when it comes to spending their money.  This section will provide information on a variety of topics related to financial institutions and consumer credit, and educational materials to protect consumers from financial fraud.

Investor Education

All investments carry risk. Market and economic changes are a part of investing and can affect your return. But losses from fraud are not acceptable. Con artists cost Americans millions of dollars every year. The Department of Banking’s Securities Division is deeply committed to protecting Connecticut investors from investment scams and abusive sales practices. The Division will vigorously pursue any case alleging the inappropriate loss of local investor funds. As part of our continuing investor education program, you may find these resources helpful.

Rental Security Deposits

When it comes to rental security deposits, both landlords and tenants have specific rights and responsibilities.  Learn the basic rules landlords must follow, the guidelines tenants should know in order to protect their security deposit, and the options for resolving disputes.

Request a Speaker

The Department of Banking has set a priority on educating the public through outreach. Department staff is available to give free informative talks and presentations on an array of topics including debt management, credit repair, financial fraud, banking scams, identity theft, investor education, and mortgage assistance.
