What does the Connecticut Poet Laureate do?

The State Poet Laureate promotes poetry and literature throughout Connecticut. They are important champions of the art form in their community and work to inspire the next generation of poets and their readers. Our poet laureate also celebrates CT’s cultural heritage and promotes literacy and literature to state residents. They:

  • Help residents across the state appreciate poetry
  • Encourage people to participate in poetry and literary arts activities

Connecticut’s poet laureate receives an annual stipend of $2,500 for a total of $7,500 for the three-year term. This award is taxable income. If you’re concerned about tax liability, please consult with an accountant. COA does not provide tax assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Serve a three-year term
  • Be a Connecticut resident during the full three-year term
  • Present at three or more public events each year as requested by COA, such as our award ceremonies and events
  • Participate in poetry experiences supported by COA

COA reserves the right to end the tenure of the State Poet Laureate if the Poet Laureate fails to fulfill duties or moves out of state during the service period.
