How are Poet Laureate applications reviewed?
A panel of poets and literary professionals evaluates each eligible applicant based on the following:
- Outstanding reputation and distinction within the field of poetry (15 points).
- Body of the poet’s original work: substantial book and periodical publications, public readings/performance experience.
- Commitment and availability to serve as an ambassador of poetry, to reach audiences, and engage in the appreciation of and participation in poetry (15 points).
- Experience with diverse audiences (educational, community, etc.)
- Alignment with COA's READI Framework (5 points).
COA and Panel Reviewers reserve the right to request further information from applicants and/or review publicly accessible information, articles, etc. about the applicant to conduct a thorough and thoughtful panel review process.
