How are poet laureates selected?

We are not currently accepting Poet Laureate nominations or applications.

A panel of poets and literary professionals evaluates each eligible applicant based on the following:

  • Outstanding reputation and distinction within the field of poetry (15 points).
  • Excellence of the poet’s original work: substantial book and periodical publications, public readings/performance experience (15 points).
  • Commitment to serve as an ambassador of poetry, to reach diverse audiences (educational, community, etc.), and engage in the appreciation of and participation in poetry (15 points).
  • Alignment with COA's READI Framework (5 points).

COA and Panel Reviewers reserve the right to request further information from applicants and/or review publicly accessible information, articles, etc. about the applicant to conduct a thorough and thoughtful panel review process.

Following the panel review process, COA staff will present recommendations to the Connecticut Arts Council for review and final approval.
