Welcome to the Office of the State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk.

The Stamford/Norwalk Judicial District serves 8 municipalities with about 380,000 residents located about 30 miles northeast of New York City. It is the most populous Judicial District in the state. The State's Attorney's office is responsible for the prosecution of all criminal offenses which occur in the Judicial District, which includes the communities of Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton.

The Office of the State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk office, located at Stamford Superior Court, prosecutes the more serious cases, mostly those crimes classified under state law as class A or class B felony offenses, from all communities in the Judicial District.

The Geographical Area office, located at the "Part B" Superior Court in Stamford, primarily prosecute cases involving crimes classified under state law as class C, class D or class E felony offenses as well as all misdemeanor offenses and infractions, including motor vehicle offenses.

State’s Attorney David R. Applegate

State’s Attorney David R. Applegate was appointed by the Criminal Justice Commission as the Stamford/Norwalk State’s Attorney on May 7, 2026. As State’s Attorney, Applegate is the chief law enforcement officer in the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk and oversees the prosecutors and other Division of Criminal Justice staff assigned to the Superior Court at Stamford, including the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters for Stamford at Bridgeport, and criminal matters brought to the Housing Session at Stamford.

State’s Attorney Applegate joined the Division of Criminal Justice in 2006, serving in the Stamford State’s Attorney’s Office until 2015, when he transferred to the Cold Case/Shooting Task Force Bureau in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in Rocky Hill. In 2018, he joined the Office of the State’s Attorney in the Fairfield (now Bridgeport) Judicial District.In July 2022, he was appointed State’s Attorney for the Danbury Judicial District.

State’s Attorney Applegate serves on the Training, Technology and Legislative Committees for the Division. He has served on the Danbury Mayor’s Community Advisory Committee, the Newtown Public Safety Committee and has participated in local citizens’ police academies.

State’s Attorney Applegate earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science cum laude from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and a Juris Doctor Degree from Brooklyn Law School in New York.
