INSURANCE SHOPPING? STAY SAFE ON THE INTERNET

Like many goods and services today, insurance products are readily available in the digital marketplace. Consumers can easily find quotes, compare policies, file claims, and, with just a click or a swipe, purchase policies that best meet their needs. As online shopping and data sharing continue to grow in popularity, it is crucial to protect your personal information and guard against identity theft.

What is identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when a thief steals personal information — such as your social security number, bank account details, or credit card information — to commit fraud.

How can I protect my information?

  • Enable multi-factor authentication: This adds an extra layer of security to your accounts, making it harder for intruders to gain access.
  • Update software regularly: Software updates often include security patches that address vulnerabilities and help protect against malware.
  • Use strong, unique passwords: Create complex passwords that are difficult for others to guess and avoid reusing the same password across different sites.
  • Be cautious with your personal information: Never share your personal details with unsolicited callers or emails. Be wary of phishing attempts, which may pretend to be from your bank, employer, or even a family member. Always verify the legitimacy of the source before sharing any information.
  • Ask the right questions before sharing your Social Security number: Even if the request seems legitimate, ask:
    • Why do you need it?
    • How will you protect it?
    • Can you use a different form of identification?
    • Can you use just the last four digits?
  • Monitor your credit: By law, you're entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Request these reports periodically to check for any suspicious activity.
  • Consider identity theft insurance: This type of insurance can help cover the costs of restoring your identity if it is stolen, including legal fees, lost wages, and other associated expenses.

What do I do if I am a victim of identity theft?

  • Contact your banks and credit card companies immediately to freeze or lock your accounts.
  • File a police report: In Connecticut, residents can report identity theft to their local law enforcement agency.
  • Report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission: Follow the FTC’s recommended steps to resolve the issue and protect yourself.
Stay vigilant and be proactive to protect your personal information to reduce the risk and impact identity theft and its potential impact.
