ACCIDENT PREVENTION COURSE FOR DRIVERS 60+
Take an Accident Prevention Course to Qualify for a Discount on Auto Premiums
The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) wants to inform consumers about a potential discount available to Connecticut motorists who are at least 60 years old.
Motorists aged 60+ can earn at least a 5% discount for a minimum of two years on auto insurance premiums by successfully completing a four-hour accident prevention course approved by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This discount does not apply to any group automobile insurance policy.
Steps for earning an accident prevention course insurance premium discount:
- Apply for the accident prevention course discount through your insurance company.
- Find a mature driver accident prevention course that is approved by the Connecticut DMV and is at least four hours long. Many of these courses can be accessed and completed online. To find an approved course, visit Insurance discounts | CT.gov.
- Complete the course within a year of application for the discount.
- Save on your auto insurance premium when the discount is applied.
During an accident prevention course, motorists may review techniques such as addressing drowsiness, handling aggressive conduct from other drivers, and managing various distractions while driving. These courses also serve as a refresher on the rules of the road, traffic signs, and features in newer cars.
Courses are tailored to teach participants how to deal with age-specific limitations on driving ability and may include lessons on how to cope with the effects of medication, and visual and auditory limitations.
Anyone with questions about the accident prevention course program may contact the Connecticut Insurance Department by email at insurance@ct.gov or by calling 860-297-3900.
