PREPARING FOR THE FIRST FROST OF THE SEASON

Important Tips for Homeowners and Businesses in Connecticut

Since the first frost in Connecticut is quickly approaching, the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) shares the following important information.

Homeowners and business owners in Connecticut should complete a series of indoor and outdoor inspections and tasks to prepare their homes and businesses for cold weather.

Indoor maintenance:

  • Insulate Pipes: Frozen or burst pipes can be prevented if the pipes are properly insulated before the weather gets cold. Pipes in places such as the basement, crawl spaces, or garages are particularly susceptible to bursting as these locations are typically unheated. Heat tape, heating cables, or pipe insulation can prevent your pipes from freezing or bursting.
  • Seal Drafts: Check windows and doors for drafts. Seal any air currents with weatherstripping or caulking. Eliminating drafts will keep warm air inside and reduce energy costs.
  • Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Make sure your safety detectors are working properly. Change batteries as needed and replace your detectors if they are over ten years old.

Outdoor maintenance:

  • Clean Your Gutters: Water, leaves, and other debris that builds up will freeze in your gutters after the first frost and prevent melted snow from flowing away from your roof and foundation. The ice dams from frozen debris will cause water back up and seeping under roof shingles, resulting in leaks and water damage. Overflow of water from gutters can pool around your foundation and cause cracks and moisture problems.
  • Disconnect Outdoor Spouts: Detach your outdoor hoses and shut off the water valve to prevent freezing. Lawn sprinkler systems should be turned off for the winter.
  • Clean Up Outdoor Areas: Trim trees and bushes to prevent them from falling and causing damage during winter weather. Store summer items such as furniture, lawn maintenance equipment, and pool supplies in a sheltered area.

Preparing your home or business for cold weather can save you money on heating costs, repairs and stress. Take time to alleviate your risk of damage during winter months.
