Before applying for licensure, please familiarize yourself with the general licensing policies.
An applicant for licensure must meet the eligibility requirements outlined below:
Graduation from a school of massage therapy offering a course of study of not less than five hundred (500) classroom hours with the instructor present and, at the time of the applicant’s graduation, held a current school code assigned by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and was either (A) accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education or by a state board of post-secondary technical trade and business schools; or (B) accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA). Please note that on-line instruction is not acceptable towards meeting the 500 classroom hours:
Each person submitting an application on and after October 1, 2019, shall have graduated from a school of massage therapy offering a course of study of not less than seven hundred fifty (750) classroom hours with the instructor present, that, at the time of the applicant's graduation held a school code and is accredited as outlined above and completed 60 hours of unpaid and supervised clinical or internship experience.
Recent graduates of an approved massage therapy educational programs are eligible for a temporary permit. Please note that a temporary permit is not available to licensees applying from other states or for applicants applying for reinstatement of a lapsed Connecticut license;
Successful completion of the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards or the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork formerly administered by the NCTMB. Please note that the National Examination for State Licensing (NESL) examination formerly administered by the NCTMB examination does not satisfy the examination requirement.
Applicants must arrange for the following to be submitted directly to office:
Verification form sent directly from the educational institution documenting completion of a massage therapy course of study;
For applications submitted on or after October 1, 2019, verification of 60 hours of unpaid clinical or internship experience. The applicant shall arrange for the submission of a letter from the licensed supervisor indicating the dates, location and total number of hours of unpaid clinical or internship hours. The letter shall be on business letterhead and shall be submitted directly to this office from the supervisor.
If applicable, a verification form sent directly from each state licensing authority where a license, registration or certification is or has ever been held. Some states may charge a fee for this service. For fee information, please contact the issuing authority prior to submitting your request.
A complete application and fee of $379.75. This payment also covers the Department’s cost for querying the National Practitioner Data Bank.
