Office of the State's Attorney Danbury Judicial District

Welcome to the Office of the State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Danbury.

The Danbury State's Attorney's office is responsible for the prosecution of all criminal offenses which occur in the Judicial District, which includes the communities of Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield and Sherman.

The Office of State's Attorney for the Judicial District of Danbury, or the "Part A" office located at the Danbury Superior Court, prosecutes the more serious cases, mostly those crimes classified under state law as class A or class B felony offenses, from all communities in the Judicial District.

The Geographical Area office, located at the "Part B" Superior Court in Danbury, primarily prosecutes cases involving crimes classified under state law as class C, class D or class E felony offenses as well as all misdemeanor offenses and infractions, including motor vehicle offenses.

State’s Attorney David R. Applegate

State’s Attorney David R. Applegate was appointed by the Criminal Justice Commission as the Danbury State’s Attorney on July 18, 2022. He currently serves as the chief law enforcement officer in the Judicial District of Danbury, which includes Danbury and seven surrounding communities. The State’s Attorney oversees employees at the Judicial District courthouse in Danbury and the Geographical Area courts in Danbury.

State’s Attorney Applegate joined the Division of Criminal Justice in 2006 as a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney in the Stamford State’s Attorney’s Office. In 2015, he transferred to the Cold Case/Shooting Task Force Bureau in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in Rocky Hill before joining the Office of the State’s Attorney in the Fairfield Judicial District in 2018. Prior to his service for the state of Connecticut, Attorney Applegate worked in private practice in New York City from 2004 to 2006.

State’s Attorney Applegate serves on the Legislative and Training Committees for the Division and teaches at the Bridgeport Police Department’s training academy and at the Fairfield County Detective Conference’s Detective School. He has assisted with federal criminal investigations and grand jury proceedings as a cross-designated special Assistant U.S. Attorney. 

State’s Attorney Applegate earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and a Juris Doctor Degree from Brooklyn Law School in New York.
