Professor helping students learn on their computer

Our academic approval process

One of the Connecticut Office of Higher Education (OHE) roles is to protect students. We want students to access good-quality education in person, online, or both.

To open a new school or college in CT, an entity must first seek approval from OHE. This ensures that the college or career school meets all the rules. Seek our approval:

  • As a non-CT, private career school, if you want to offer online learning to CT students
  • As a non-CT, non SARA college, if you want to offer online learning to CT students
  • To open a new CT-based private career school that does not grant degrees. This type of school readies people to pursue a career or trade.
  • To apply for or renew your State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) membership
  • Get the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) approval for your career school or college and its programs. This will allow your veteran students to use their VA benefits

Veteran benefits

SAA is a unit that gives a green light to a school or college and its programs. Once approved, veterans can use their education benefits at these institutions.
