FAKE INSURANCE IDENTIFICATION CARDS LEAD TO SEVERE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES
The Connecticut Insurance Department wants to alert consumers about the rise in the sale and usage of counterfeit insurance identification cards. These fake cards are distinguishable to authorities due to inconsistencies with the information registered in the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) system. These counterfeits may result in financial losses and potential fines and penalties.
Due to financial challenges and the state’s mandatory automobile insurance requirement, some drivers are turning to fake insurance identification cards to show insurance coverage for their vehicles. However, relying on these false documents not only puts individual drivers and their families at risk in case of an accident but also leaves innocent parties without any coverage for their losses, even if they're not at fault.
Driving without valid insurance isn't just a serious motor vehicle violation—it can lead to severe consequences, including criminal charges.
Tips to Protect Yourself from Fraudulent Insurance Cards:
- Always purchase auto insurance from a licensed insurance broker or agent. Verify an agent's license by visiting our "verify a license" page.
- If you are offered a ‘low cost’ insurance identification card—like most things—if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is! Don’t fall into that unsuspecting trap.
- Protect yourself and others by ensuring that you always have valid and legitimate insurance coverage.
